Are you ready to work at the cutting edge of photonics technology and help shape the future of integrated photonic chips? SMART Photonics is a foundry offering manufacturing services for InP-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs)—the technology that’s revolutionizing industries like telecom, data communications, sensing, and quantum computing. With our ambitious growth and commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation, we are expanding our R&D team to continue leading the way.

Why SMART Photonics?

As a R&D Scientist specialized in Thermo-opto-mechanical modelling, you’ll be part of a vibrant and fast-growing company located at the High Tech Campus, a global innovation hub. You’ll work alongside talented, passionate colleagues and have access to state-of-the-art technologies to innovate and develop processes that meet the needs of our customers. Together, we are building the future of integrated photonics.

In this role, you will report to the Cluster Lead of the PIC & PDK team in R&D. This team enables and improves characterization of building blocks and uses these measurements to develop and validate simulation models. The data resulting from characterization and simulations serves as input for SMART’s Process Design Kit (PDK).

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and refine thermo-opto-mechanical simulation models for cutting-edge optical chips that form the backbone of future technologies;
  • Analyse and optimize the building blocks that are used in optical chip designs based on results of these simulations.
  • Develop and implement test methodologies to verify the models.
  • Collaborate intensively with R&D, building block- and chip designers, product management, and product development teams;
  • Drive innovation by participating in improvement projects like 8D’s and FMEAs;
  • Present research outcomes, designs, and testing results in reports and technical presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, (Applied) Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, OR a Master’s degree with at least 4 years of relevant industry experience;
  • Strong experience with finite element simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL and/or Ansys) for thermo-opto-mechanical simulations, preferably with a focus on microscale applications.
  • Affinity with semiconductor fabrication technologies and preferably with photonics products;
  • Solid numerical and analytical skills, creative problem-solving ability, and a results-driven mindset;
  • A proactive communicator with an independent drive to deliver top results;
  • Ownership and an Eye for Quality;
  • Strong communication skills in English.

What We Offer:

  • A challenging position with room to grow in a high-tech, dynamic industry.
  • Exposure to state-of-the-art photonics technology, working in a field that’s shaping the future.
  • Continuous investment in your professional and personal development, with access to coaching, training (internal and external), and on-the-job learning.
  • A vibrant work environment located at the High Tech Campus, in the heart of Eindhoven, offering restaurants, a gym, and networking events.
  • Relocation assistance and support for Highly Skilled Migrant Visa applications, ensuring a smooth transition for international candidates.
